ADVANCED GUITAR ENSEMBLE SYLLABUS
PREREQUISITE: Ability to read fluently up to the 7 th position as well as moderate
to advanced chord knowledge

Course Description
Guitar Ensemble is a performance group like Band, Orchestra, and Chorus. Its purpose is to
learn and perform guitar ensemble literature. As a result of this study, students by necessity will
improve in their music reading skills, historical and academic knowledge of the guitar, its players
and literature, and will experience an improvement in their overall musicianship. Traditional
guitar pedagogy and technique will be stressed.
Methods of Instruction
Performance ensemble concepts, skills, and protocol will be addressed in a rehearsal setting.
Ensemble music will be provided by the instructor as the year progresses.
Methods of Assessment
All students will have minimum competencies that will serve as benchmarks to their
development. Students will be assessed via a portfolio of performance. These assessments will
be in an applied format. All students will be expected to further develop and progress. In
addition to the above competencies, each student will receive a weekly class work overview.
Periodic written progress reports will be made available to parents/guardians upon request. All
students will be expected to adequately practice and prepare their music for performance.
Materials
Students will need to bring their own quality nylon or steel string guitar from home.
Behavioral Expectations
Students will be expected to attend classes fully prepared and to abide by standard guidelines
with respect to personal conduct and punctuality. Gum, food, and/or drink will not be allowed in
the guitar classroom.
Performance Opportunities
The focus of every ensemble group is performance. Opportunities and performance venues will
vary from semester to semester. The instructor will all students and parents/guardians apprised
of these developments.
